I wish I had a camera to post a picture of this, although I am at college and don't have a good enough one. Anyway... I am going through box of pennies and just found one with the date "974." The 1 is missing and it was very clearly never stamped. I looked at it under a 65x eye microscope to verify. I have the Red Book, which mentions nothing of an error like this for this year. Has anyone ever found something like this or know the rarity of it?

Update: On closer look, in the right light... you can see an EXTREMELY faint line where there should be a 1, although there is absolutely no elevation at all. It does not look like wear.

You probably have an error that is called a "greased die." This is when part of the die is filled and doesn't come out in the coin.

Nice error!

Yes and I now see that the top only reads "In God We Tr." I will see if any of my friends have a decent camera and upload a picture when I get the chance. Are greased dies rare finds?

Nope, coins struck with a clogged die(grease, press gunk, etc) are very common and would only carry a premium if major portions of the design are impaired.
