Hello I am looking for some possible help in identifying what looks to me an old coin of some sort that my grandfather had collected from somewhere. The head side looks like it matches a few different roman coins but there is no writing or lettering on it and the back looks like an old caveman drawing of a chicken with a stick

We will need better pictures to be able to properly identify the coin for you.

If you can scan it, that could possibly be better. My experience with Phones and pictures, is that they are normally pretty poor quality

Just a guess, the Head of Athena with the owl sacred to her. (Greece, not Rome) Close but not exact: https://goccf.com/t/80262Maybe the moderators could move this topic to the Ancients forum. That's where the real experts are. I saved off a sample and I think that you need to increase the bit rate if possible. I read 72 dpi in the properties. You need a minimum of 200 dpi and I find 600 dpi on my scanner to provide the best results.

Calinut,
Size and weight would help in determining authenticity as well as much better pictures. At first glance, I would say at the very least the owl design is very suspect.

Thank You Matt you have me pointed in the right direction. I've found quite similiar coins online, looks as though it is possibly some version of a Tetradrachm coin with Athena on the front and the sacred owl on the back, I weighed it and the wieght is 16 grams which is similair in weight as for diameter its roughly the size of a dime. Does anyone know if these coins are highly duplicated or counterfeited and is there any way to tell or shall I just take it to a coin dealer and hope he knows what he is talking about?

Better pictures are required. This type of coin is copied perhaps more than any other ancient coin. Some of the experts here will be able to give you better opinions but only with better images. Also weight and measurement would be a help. BTW, where did you get the coin?

That owl looks very odd. The eyes kinda remind me of Wall-E.

Weight and measurement seem wrong. The coin is the size of a dime which should make it the size of a drachm not a tet, but 16g is mighty heavy for a drachm
