This Brenner medal is part of a series of six medals designed and marketed by Tovio Johnson to honor famous coin designers. The series was launched in 1962 and continued periodically for several years. The Brenner medal was the second of the series, the first honored Augustus St. Gaudens. Other medals in the series were
Charles Barber (#3),
Christian Gobrecht (#4), Euaenetos (#5) and Longacre-Morgan (#6). The large size of the medals allowed for each to feature an attractive, nicely detailed, high relief design.
All of the medals were struck in bronze and silver, with mintages for each of the silver medals being capped at 5,000. The medals are three inches in diameter. Johnson also marketed custom holders for the medals; one style of holder featured places for the medal as well as a coin designed by the artist being honored. The St. Gaudens holder, for example, had a place for a gold Double Eagle, St. Gauden's most famous coin design.
The bronze versions were available for $5.00 each, while the serial numbered silver medals were available for $30.00. Johnson offered a lay-away plan for collectors wishing to purchase all six silver medals; matched serial number sets were available.
Medals were a popular numismatic collectible at the time the series was launched and a good number of the bronze and silver medals were sold by Johnson.
