. . . for these classics? A lot of them I just kind of went "OOOOH PRETTY! I WANT ONE OF THOSE" and now have the opportunity to pick some up. One of my coworkers inherited a rather large collection from his grandpa, and is looking to sell a few pieces. I invited him to join us here 1) because he's going to have a lot left that he wants to hold onto, 2) he's very new to this, and 3) so he knows I'm not going to rip him off. (If you're already here . . . hi, Mark!)

So he brought in a whole bunch of coins today for me to check out, and here's what I'm interested in:

--roughly a dozen 90% halves. These include Barbers (which I would be reselling, probably to you's all, as I have no interest in the Barber series), Franklins, Kennedys, and one very gorgeous Standing Liberty (I've never seen one before that wasn't beat all to *coughcoughindistinctsyllables*). I know the Franklins and Kennedys are considered modern, but since everything here is 1964 or earlier and probably a lot of it is worth melt, I'm lumping them.

--two IHC--1899 and 1904. I was dumb and didn't write down which was which, but I'd grade one F/VF (feather detail mostly missing) and one XF/AU (I have a hard time with the higher grade XF/lower grade AU still).

--one 1886 Morgan, no mm, that I will say with confidence would grade at least AU-58 and might even warrant an MS grade; I saw no cleaning lines, and the only visible wear was a tiny bit of rub-mark on her cheek.

--one AU 1925 Peace. I don't know if there's a mm--not sure where it is on a Peace and since we were at work and trying to check out customers in between my goggling and him being all proud and stuff, I didn't have time to look.

--one 1850 large cent in XF/AU. I don't know my varieties very well, but it's the one where her hair is up in a bun in the back and she's wearing what looks like an open cap or possibly a solid crown that says LIBERTY on it.

--one V nickel I forgot to catch the year on. It's holed (right through the middle, too ), but other than that all of the detail is PERFECT.

--a trime I didn't catch a year on. I would call this VG/F--the III on the back is mostly just indicated now, not really "raised" per se.

--I mentioned the Walking Liberty above, but given that I know I won't be able to afford all this, I will say that she's the one I'd like most of all the halves, and she is a 1941 in VF/XF. Again, no idea where the mintmark is located.

What would be some fair prices for this stuff (separately, and if I offer together would the price go down)? When I asked, he didn't even know what "spot" was--I told him the two dollars would probably get $28/ea from a dealer if they're not rare dates and gave him a rough idea of what spot is at the moment. I don't want to rip him off, but I'd also like to find a fair price for myself. Most of these aren't things I plan on actively collecting a typeset of--they're things where I'd like one or two examples "just because," and I have no idea what kind of price range we're even talking about.

. . . . oh, and, uh. I don't know if this is allowed or not (hopefully it is), but if anybody's interested, he's got a metric crapton of Barbers, which I don't collect and everyone here seems to adore. I'd be happy to do a "buy from him, sell to someone else at cost" if someone here has a specific year or something they're looking for.

For the halves melt value is a little under $12.30 a coin at the moment. For the dollars its 26 something. Silvers in a bit of a dive at the moment (-60something cents last I checked) and with the price swings lately id check the morning of the buy or at least the night before. 10-11 seems pretty fair for the halfs considering the time and effort youre saving him with the easy sale, especially if you buy a good sized lot.

Really though what ever you two decide is fair, is fair. I know its cliche, but I believe its true so I was that guy and said it.

Id more than likely be interested in some of the O Barber halves if he has any.

Will do. We don't work together again for a week, so I'll see where silver stands next Saturday and meantime wait to see if anybody who knows trimes or large cents pops in here.

When you say "O", I'm assuming you mean as-in-New-Orleans. Where would he/I look for the mm? (And do you do Barber dimes? He had a couple of those, also.)

I'd be interested in the Barber dimes. Just started filling my Barber dime book last nigh and there are plenty of holes!

Yes New Orleans. I dont do the dimes but Ill start almost anything if the price is right

For the mint mark (not sure where it would be on the dimes) it should be on the reverse just below the eagle tail
