Errors, Or Does Someone Not Like Maine Quarters?

While looking through my fiance's coins, I came across two Maine State Quarters and made me stop and wonder what was going on. First is the No MM quarter below:

Errors,-Or-Does-Someone-Not-Like-Maine-Quarters?

Looks like a struck through or did some "Maniac" try to carve up the MM?

The second is completely copper color:

Would this make it through the mint's QC or did another "Maniac" drop it in an acid bath? This coin was a .4 gram lighter than another Maine quarter.

I can't tell about the mint mark but the other one is just toned that color.It is not missing the clad layer if that is what you were thinking.
