Regardless of how many of any coins are minted, a thing called popularity makes them either scarce or not. Also, sort of makes them expensive. If people keep saying coins dated in 2009 will be expensive, rare, difficult to find and if enough believe that, for a while they will be expensive. Eventually as more of the hoarders release their stashes, the prices would drop. Those 2009 Linocoln Cents started a sort of popularity thing in Numismatics and many people that know little to nothing about coins ran out and grabbed them. Dealers too hoarded them in rolls. And not knowing for sure what this is all about, many people just grab any coin dated 2009.
Watch and see what happens with the 3009 coins.

The reason that I started this thread is that the nickels and dimes are still hard to find out in circulation and thus people tend to think that they are rare.

Wquin's posting shows what the population is.

In relationship to other coin mintages the entire year just wasn't highly coined. According to one source I've read (which I forget who it was) the mint stopped making nickels and dimes sometime around April or May. So that's why I save this year especially. The numbers just are not there for a circulating coin.

Don't forget that 2009 was especially hard hit by the recession and as such the mint didn't coin a lot for circulation.

I just haven't found a lot and I was wondering if other members might think that I'm wasting my time.

I dont think well see them circulated for quite some time. My theory is the majority are being hoarded as other people saw the low mintage by comparison. While it is a lot lower than other years its still about 40 million from each mint. I dont think theyll command a premium, but I dont think youre wasting your time pulling them. Worse case theyre worth face so you dont have anything to lose.

That's the way that I figure it. The only thing that I'm wasting now is just time.

(edit) It's not like I'm hoarding gold pieces.

If your anything like me the time isn't even a total loss as the roll searching or whatever is somewhat enjoyable, at least until your eyes start to hurt lol

With all modern coins I think only the higher grades will bring a premium in the years to come and that could even take a while. Anything in circulated condition the mintages are just to high for our standard coins imo unless your looking for like 70 years down the line for your kids

Look at the 1944 penny, nearly the same mintage.. obviously I would love to have some of those now! so no matter how long it takes, some day they will be coveted! I guess we are doing it for the kids and grandkids! because in 70 years I will be 100. And most likely long gone!

On some levels with moderns thats certainly the case in terms of getting them to be high valued. At least well get to enjoy them in the meantime
