Been kind of wanting to add one to my collection for sometime now and am happy I managed to win this coin. It's a bronze Fals of the Umayyad Caliphate, minted at Tabariya(Tiberias) sometime between 697-740 AD. Paid $13.50 shipped for it. It will be my first Islamic coin. Aside from this info the seller provided, I have no other info/clue about this coin. Obverse: The Kalima, in 3-line script, within three circles Reverse: In Arabic script: "Muhammad rasul Allah" Tabariya mint, Album 188 21 mm, 4.05 g Edited by VisigothKing 10/21/2012 8:52 pm

Nice coin!
I have two Islamic coins myself. I doubt I'll get into collecting them but I figured I'd own a couple of them.

"Album 188" is the catalogue reference number, in Stephen Album's "A Checklist of Islamic Coins". Assuming the dealer's attribution is correct, this page on zeno.ru has a bunch of similar coins.

That is a great patina. I think I have an uncleaned Islamic coin at home. I'll check later and post a picture if it in fact exists. I think I would rather send it to someone who appreciates that sort of coin instead of having it languish at the bottom of my bag-o-dirties, because I doubt I will ever bother cleaning it.

Thanks guys! Quote: I doubt I'll get into collecting them but I figured I'd own a couple of them Same here. There are a few ancient/medieval cultures that I wouldn't mind having at least one example of. Quote: I think I have an uncleaned Islamic coin at home. I wouldn't mind taking it off your hands. I am cleaning some coins at the moment (total noob at cleaning ancients here!) and could use the practice. Oh yeah and thinking about it my only Islamic coin could use some company

Haha, can't have your new baby getting lonesome. If memory serves it isn't in that bad of shape either. Good enough to see what looks like arabic writing, at least to my untrained eye, through the dirt.

I have a few Islamic coins yet I know next to nothing about them but on the world of coins there is a wide variety of experts on the subject. Many of the guys their specialize in the early Islamic coins of India and the surrounding areas. Good Luck and great piece.

Here is the coin I was thinking of, but now I am not sure why I thought it was Islamic. I guess it is possible, but I have no idea what it is. Hmmm.

I'm just as clueless about it as you are Nothus I would also guess Islamic. The first photo kind of reminds me of those Arab-Byzantine coins that imitate folles, with the M on the reverse but with Arabic script.

I suppose I can toss it in some olive oil for a few weeks and see if enough scrubs off to at least see what it is.
