Need to know a few things first:
Prices,
Who are the sellers?
What are the provenances of each?

Just me, but I always like to see them in hand first, unless the seller has an unquestionable reputation.

Could just be the pictures, but both of these coins don't look right to me. The first one looks cast and the patina on the second one looks fake.

Haha, just sent you a pm over at forvm recommending you come here. Guess you can disregard that untitled email then. I agree with echizento and Gil-galad that the first one looks iffy, I don't know much about fake patinas though. I would never buy a nice looking Caligula from a dealer that hasn't earned my trust.

thanks guys, I do appreciate the thoughts. I was thinking the Germanicus looked a bit too "clean" but I have seen a ton of photos on line that are similar in that they are pretty well preserved. I did find a number of known forgeries, but they were all very different than this coin. Am I allowed to say who dealers are here so that any specific knowledge on the dealers can be shared?

You are - people here wont swoop in and steal the buy either. Lots of people have many opinions on sellers - I'm sure they'll have something.

If that top one is real - and I agree, its questionable, then Id DEFINITELY take it.

I'm fairly certain the Germanicus is fake, but I need to look around to be sure. In this condition a Germanicus Dupondius sells for between $1500 and $5000. If you think the deal is too goo, then it probably is. The second coin looks OK to me, but I will admit I have limited knowledge of this type of coin. Stevex6 likes to use the quote "where there is doubt, there is no doubt". Unless you know the seller has an ironclad reputation and a 100% guarantee of authenticity, I'd recommend you pass.
