That is the most bored looking king I have ever seen. It almost looks like he is pouting. Love the weapons, nice replacement! I think that is the first Bosporian coin I have seen.

Quote: Tiberius Julius Sauromates I Philocaesar Philoromaios Eusebes, also known as Sauromates I, flourished the second half of the 1st century and the first half of the 2nd century, died 123 A.D. ... was a prince and Roman Client King of the Bosporan Kingdom.
Quote: Through his paternal grandfather, Sauromates-I was a descendant of Mark Antony from his second marriage to his paternal cousin Antonia Hybrida Minor, thus Sauromates I was related to various members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty ...
Quote: Sauromates was also a descendant of Roman Client Rulers Polemon I of Pontus, Pythodorida of Pontus and Cotys VIII of Thrace ... through his paternal grandfather, Sauromates-I was a descendant of Greek Macedonian Kings: Antigonus I Monophthalmus, Seleucus I Nicator and Regent, Antipater => These three men served under King Alexander the Great ===>>>> this dude may look bored, but apparently this dude was no mutt!!

Hmmmm, interesting => apparently 25 years after my coin was minted, they got rid of the "bored-king" and merely went with a wreath sitting on the curule chair ... I admit that both coins rock, but I still think that my original version is far more cool ...

Interesting coin! It doesn't quite look like a Greek coin, does it? I can only guess the Romans influenced the coinage styles of areas they influenced.

Quote: Description: A nice example with light tooling and smoothing typical for this issue. VF What can you tell us about 'typical smoothing'? It is trure that most of these coins look tooled to the point that I have avoided ever buying one. Are most on the market from one find that was butchered by the finders? were the coins made in some way that makes them looked smoothed even if they were not? I agree that the coin is interesting but the look of the seated king seems to come from the smoothing/tooling (is the patina modern?). This seems to be accepted in the market for Bosperan coins where it would cause a Greek or Roman to be rejected as damaged goods.

Well, ya can't please 'em all, eh? ... dougsmit => first of all => thanks for commenting (I always love hearing your critiques, good or bad) ... secondly, I admit that I had to look-up and discover what smoothing & tooling even meant!! ... but I also admit that I still think that this coin rocks!! ... so this one will go into one of my wonderful albums with the valuable learning comment attached => "try to avoid smoothing and tooling" (it'll bite ya in the arse!!) Thanks for the comments, guys

Neat coin. Unusual I don't think I have seen this coin before. Implements of war - weapons and such would make a great smackdown. Just saying. Great Coin Steve as always! Good thing you buy coins and don't use drugs or you surely would be dead. Great job picking them.
