Found this 1971 penny, with what looks like a plating error, because of the piece at the top. However, I'm thinking this can also be PMD?

Hello,

Firstly, being that this type of Canadian penny is 'normally' composed of 98% copper, 0.5% tin, and 1.5% zinc would you be able to indicate with a high degree of certainty if the light colored metal remaining with the coin is either tin or zinc?

Secondly, the last photo on this thread displays some of this lighter colored metal under the 'c' of cent; this patch of metal also appears to be 'sitting' above the copper. Could you attempt to dislodge this piece of metal using a rigid pointed object?

Then if it comes off of the coin I would have a lab verify its metal composition, confirming any zinc or tin content.

If it come back having a composition other that Zn(zinc) or Sn(tin), it has to be PMD...

I suspect PMD, looks like someone was playing with tin-lead solder.

Looks like a piece of tin foil is stuck to it.

SPP is right...It is definitely solder splash..See how it is raised above the surface of your coin.
