Was metal detecting with the daughter a few weeks ago next to some old train track and an old train bridge, and found this. I live in Upper Michigan, just North of here is considered "Copper Country" and I was wondering if this was some type copper ore, possibly iron and copper I cant tell. It does have a green tint to it and on the bottom where it was exposed to the dirt was red and green.

Sorry for the quick pick. I will get more later. Its over a foot wide and a good 6 inches tall. My guess its probably close to 40-45 pounds.

With all the iron up your way I am guessing hematite,an iron oxide that will accumulate in layers at the base of shale beds. Without seeing it and hefting it,this is purely an "educated guess".

I think it's copper ore. Here's a chunk that I found in the UP in the Michigamme River area. It's copper ore with quartz and fool's gold mixed in. There are also some dark red crystals in it that don't show up in the picture. I was a rock hound when I was a kid and just love finds like yours!

If you're near any kind of college or university, a quick visit to the geology department would probably get you a professional answer in short order. My experience in years past was that the geo dept rockhounds totally LOVE getting to play the pro and render an opinion to us civilians. They were super-helpful and most cordial when I sought help from them.

Thanks freddy. And st joe. Funny you mentioned fools gold which in real terms is pyrite I believe. Because this rock I have has a nice metallic sparkle to parts of it. Very neat rock/metal. I would just love to learn more about it

The light green looks like malachite which is a type of copper ore.

These are samples I picked up at the De Grussa mine in Western Australia.
They mine Copper and Gold ( there is some Gold in with the Copper ore).
They are very heavy for their size

Nice trout! Just curious what gives these rocks the red color? I notices why metal detecting for a little while this year some pennies I find have a red green tint to them.
