 Gemmy little proofs, aren't they? Or are they proofy little gems? Either way, they're gorgeous, Dollar! As I recall, that was a coronation year, so these would have been in the proof set in addition to their regular distribution, adding another 20,000 or so to the normally puny mintage numbers. I remember thinking that was a very good thing for type collectors like me, back before I spun off into tokens. Were the "regular" sets distributed in the ceremony on Maundy Thursday struck as proofs too, or are they just plain FDC?

Not easy to find informations about the 4-piece maundy set! Despite NGC listing them as prooflike in ther price catalog, it seems they were struck as proof as well... Mine are from a rather decent coronation proof set

My latest Halfpenny to arrive in the post from across the pond. A nice example of a mule Somersetshire Bath 1794 of Mary Lambe & Son, Tea dealers and Grocers at the India House, this piece was from the Deane Collection Part II and is listed as Rare in Dalton & Hamer, A touch of weakness in the obverse legend shows due to a very forceful striking. Browsing Numista using the "Music" tag I came across a ½ Penny conder token from Middlesex by Forster that featured the melody of the anthem "God Save the King". Since I collect coins related to composers/music, I thought this would be a nice addition. I used Google to do an image search across the internet and was able to locate this token with a seller in Northumberland, UK. I contacted the seller by email and purchased the token, which was promptly shipped. It arrived yesterday.  |
