Here's is another Jersey 1813 token. It is listed by McCammon as T8 and Withers 1682.

hkfears, great to see you back here! Anyone interested in learning all there is to know about money and all its forms in Jersey needs to spend some quality time on Harold's website entitled Jersey Coins and Banknotes, at jerseycoins.com
As for today's topic, Harold, I'll see your W1682 and raise you a W1681!
As a footnote on the scarcity of these and the other Channel Islands coppers issued during the Regency Era, virtually all of them appear in the Galata "Token Book" without values, instead showing just their rarity indication, a fair barometer of how infrequently specimens change hands in the observable market; i.e., public auctions, dealers' reports of private sales, etc. Paul Withers's remarks concerning these two tokens in particular notes that because of their links to the Channel Islands "...these pieces make silly money at auction." Jersey 1813 One Penny token, Withers 1682, McCammon T8, RRR. Jersey 1813 One Penny token, Withers 1681, McCammon T10, Davis 12 (Channel Islands), RR.

Withers states that for this penny token, there are two varieties. The first is 1681 and has a weight of 17.8 grams and is considered RR (few specimens available.) The second variety, 1681a, has a weight of 19.1 grams and is considered RRR (very few specimens seen, or most known are in 'captivity'.) In my collection I have a dozen of these tokens and here are their weights in grams: 1681 RR 17.12 17.36 17.42 17.48 17.48 17.38 17.63 17.00 17.23 17.63 1681a RRR 19.51 1681? RRR 16.10 Perhaps there should be a new type as 1681b with a weight of 16.10 grams.

I've been conditioned over the years -- by Withers, probably -- to view edge variants and/or die axis as the primary sort when it comes to distinguishing between varieties within a type. Which edge does your lightweight outlier have, hkfears?

Which edge does your lightweight outlier have, hkfears? This morning, I checked all the edges on these tokens. All from the lightest to the heaviest have the same edge graining as described by Withers as 1681. I will say there were two tokens with their graining very light and at first glance one would say they were smooth. Holding them in the correct light, I could see a slight trace of the graining on one side near the rim. So, perhaps my 19.51 token is not a 1681a but a 1681. But it is heavier than the rest. Just something to think about.
