Another example of the necessity money that circulated alongside NumisRob's Cornish penny token (above) was this "Brutus" token, one of five distinct tokens issued by the British Copper Company between 1811 and 1815 that encompassed one penny and four halfpenny types. Across all five types combined, there are an amazing 55 varieties recorded in Withers' British Copper Tokens 1811-1820, chiefly distinguished by die pairings and trivial differences in the location of design elements relative to one another. I guess I'm a completist, because my spreadsheet tells me I've managed to accumulate 41 of those varieties! This specimen is the most common variety in the Brutus series. While it's not the highest grade represented in my hoard, it's the easiest to share here, since PCGS has taken care of the photography for me. Meanwhile, I still have no idea why Brutus would have been a suitable subject for a smelting plant, but I should note that the Brutus celebrated here is not the Senator who assassinated Julius Caesar in 44 BCE. This is the Brutus who founded the Roman Republic in 509 BCE or thereabouts.British Copper Company halfpenny, undated. Withers 168, Davis Essex 33. PCGS AU55.

Thanks. I'm a bit disappointed about the scratches on the reverse. The coin is very dark, so I didn't notice them at the show with the coin in it's holder. Still an attractive coin otherwise.

The scratches could be worse.
