This might not be the right forum, so my apologies. There seems not to be a general World coins forum that accepts posts.

This is a 1921 10 Pfennig of Germany.

The field under the tail feathers, especially, seems to be rough rather than smooth, but I don't know whether this is visible enough below.

I see what Pertinax might be wondering.

The 1921 10 Pfennig comes in 2 types

KM 20 in iron - very smooth flat field with mintmark.

KM 26 in zinc - faint pitting or bubbling is very common, and is due to the zinc reacting with the atmosphere - no mintmark.

This is a superb specimen of KM 26 mint state or very nearly so.

Zinc was a terrible thing to make coins out of(just like our great Lincoln copper plated Zinc pennies in the states), I have gone through Thousands of world coins and have not seen any that look better on the bird/crest side.

Thanks for your replies.
Should I treat the surface to stop it degrading further ?

How do I do that ?

How should zinc coins be stored ?

Keep it dry. The only treatment I have ever done is a soak it acetone, and let it dry.

I don't think treating the coin will prevent or halt the degradation - it's inside the coin.

This type of corrosion occurs most often to zinc coins when they're in the ground or in wet salty conditions, so the fact that you've taken it out of those conditions is pretty effective. You could wash any remaining salt off using lukewarm soft or distilled water mixed with washing up liquid and drying it well, then keeping it in a plastic or paper coin envelope.

Some people varnish their zinc coins, and I think that's a bad idea
a) it reduces the visibility of the design and hence the grade
b) removing the varnish with acetone leaves a sediment
