The value of a Dollar can be set on a quantity of Gold, just as a Standard kilogram is set on a weight at the International Bureau of Weights and measures. Everyone doesn't need to own a precision tested metal weight to know how much a kilogram is. It's when the merchant takes the 20 lb sack of wheat and prints 50 lbs on the package.
