Can anyone recommend where I can find a reasonably priced, reasonable grade instance of this coin? I want one for my Large Cent run, just as a companion piece to the 1797 1p, which I have. I don't need an MS65 or anything, just something where George and Britannia are visible.

Thanks in advance.

prepare yourself: in better grades, they are quite expensive.

My budget is $25-30. Is that out of whack?

Plenty on ebay over here from £5 upwards; you should get a reasonable one for your budget although the better grades do cost a fortune. See the completed listings...

Being of pure copper, the metal is relatively soft. With such a large heavy coin, rim bumps can be a major issue. This is a significant factor in the determination of value.

Sounds like my 1p, which is an AG or so grade Also with an awful rim bump, and many other problems... then again I don't try to get many large cents either.

(I would also love a 2p, in any grade where I can tell what it is - but all the ones I've seen for sale were well over what I could afford. In fact, I got my 1p for less than two bucks, and haven't since seen one in any grade offered for less than twenty - and I'm probably understating it, as I don't remember the exact figures...)

Try looking for them outside of coin collecting circles. Places like the cheaper antique shops, junk shops and the like are worth considering. Because these coins weigh 2oz many of them were used as kitchen weights for years. My first one was bought as an old kitchen weight in just such a shop, where they did not know about its monetary value. It is a bit rough, but the images are clear enough for the kind of thing you need.

I got my 1797 1p for 2-3 bucks because it was oddly listed.
