Hi, wonder if anyone can help give me a value. I have a 1971 Eisenhower proof set encased in hard plastic. It doesn't have a mint mark beside the "1971" on the front. What do I have here. Help, thanks.

The 1971 s proof Eisenhower coin came as a single coin and not with the 1971 s proof set. If your coin has no mint mark it is not a proof and if it is housed with other coins it is not a US mint packaged product.

Imprinted on the bottom of the plastic (tails side of coin) it says "packaged by US mint". Is this the eisenhower with or without silver?

A photo of exactly what you have would help determine what you actually have. :) If the plastic casing looks anything like the one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-EISENH...190634887446, then the casing is from what we term a "brown box" silver Eisenhower. However, with no mintmark , it is possibly a business strike clad Eisenhower dollar that has been placed in the plastic mint holder. That is why a photo of the actual coin and case would help to determine what you have and the value thereof.

Yes, this is it. ( see now that it actually says "packaged by US mint on both sides) So, if I got $7 from a coin store, that would be a reasonable price, right?

FredderF, like others say, we need pictures. If not, look yours up on ebay and see what the EXACT same coin sells for. This should give you a better idea. If yours is silver then 7 dollars is a steal of a deal for the buyer.

The current spot on the ASW is $9.77 for a silver Ike. Being only 40% silver content, selling it "as bullion" to a dealer, $7 could be considered reasonable depending on your area (number of B&M coin shops, rural/urban city, etc). You must consider the fact that 40% silver is a far cry from .999 bullion and rarely carries any premium value. With a bit of shopping around, you may be able to get more. If you have the brown sleeve, obtaining up to $9-$10 from a dealer is not unheard of at the current spot levels, as it could bring a premium for niche collectors. And, you could likely get even more selling to a collector (like on ebay) directly, however, you would also incur the extra costs of whatever venue you utilize. Some would argue that dealing with the hassle of selling private party through a venue outweigh the lower price realization of simply selling to a local dealer and would settle for the latter.
