I know that acetone works for silver coins
to safely remove organic material like tape/glue residue, etc

Can acetone be used on copper coins?

I would take a junk copper coin and try it and judge the results for yourself..also I have a post ACETONE/VINEGAR with 6 pages of replies from other members. There are many fine answers to your question and maybe some other ideas for you! Check it out. I learned a lot.

There is a large database of prior information available by searching the forum. Yes, you'll get equally-good answers in this thread as time goes by, but you can get there faster by searching for the word "acetone" and reading the threads that seem relevant.

Short answer? Yes, but maybe....

Acetone is fine for red copper. I don't like it as much on brown copper though as it can alter the patina slightly. Distilled water and xylene are better choices for brown copper.

Acetone won't clean up certain issues. It's great for the green gunk that almost rubs off on your fingers. But if it's corroded you will find acetone doesn't do much.

I have a couple junk wheats that have been sitting in a jar of acetone for over a year. The solution has clouded some, but even with infrequent agitation the coins are still about the same.
