I just got wild and crazy and bought a coin from a seller in Europe (Malta - part of the UK). The coin is only a $70 item. It's recent common mintage and not a historical national treasure or a piece of antiquity or anything like that.

I know I'll be paying sales tax to the state I live in and I know how to do that, so no problem there.

My concern is US Customs. I went through their website and couldn't even find an appropriate telephone number to call for information. The website seemed to exude a typically frosty "we're God, so don't bother us" government attitude.

Now I'm starting to wonder what kind of grief I've set myself up for. Anybody out there have any experience with this kind of situation and how the drill goes? Any experiences, insights, suggestions, contact telephone numbers and horror stories will be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

So that's the Maltese govt; or something like Del Campe? The latter sucks, IMO, as far as communication

I have bought several times from dealers in Malta, coins from $10 to $100 and all they do is pack it in a bubble mailer and mail it to me. There is usually a Maltese customs/post office form filled out on the back of the envelope and that's it. No interest from U.S. customs at all.

Actually, I've never seen any evidence that U.S. Customs has ever looked at any coins mailed to me from Australia, Canada, U.K., Germany, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia, Ireland, Finland, Egypt, Mexico, Spain, Portugal or Italy.
Portugal and Italy took the longest, followed by Canada.
