Have any of you been to the New York International Numismatic Convention. There is a good chance I am going to be in NYC during the convention this coming year and I am currious about it.

I know that you can get general admission with a coupon for only $5.00 (see sight below). Entry for the auction is more, but I would love to look at collection. I have checked out the selling prices for the 2009 auction and the selling prices seem high to me, but the coins do seem to be exceptional:) Is the auction worth it? Also they say there are educational workshops; I would really dig that! The site below seems unclear to me about when these are scheduled. Anyway. I would appreciate hearing your feedback. Also does anyone else hear plan to be there? Thanks.

Looking at the dealer list, I know about a dozen of them personally and that many again by reputation. You will see thousands of coins (mostly that you can not afford) and have the chance to learn more than you might from a $100 worth of books all for $5. That is a no brainer. Included there are a couple of what I consider to be the finest gentlemen in the trade and one that regularly sells tooled junk. I did not recognize a dealer known to me to handle much in the way of coins under $200 or so as their main stock but you never know what they might bring. I have never gone because of the cost of staying and travelling to a show that is so much above my head when I could see many of the same dealers at Baltimore (a free show in a place I can do as a day trip). If you are already in NYC at that time, you definitely should go.

I'd love to go, but not this year. Too much happening here at home. But there is a large show in Orlando in January or February I will try to make. Like Doug, I can make Orlando a day trip. Good luck if you go. You might want to bring along a cup to catch your drool.

In theory, there is no bigger show than NYI. FUN has a big name, too. The question is whether you are seeking the experience or coins for your collection. Will dealers who paid $1000 for a table bring what you collect? I do better at shows with $200 tables. That does not mean I would not pay $5 to get in NYI but that I would not be able to buy enough coins to make the $500 transportation, room and food costs worthwhile purely for what I would get for my collection. I really enjoy coin shows. They are my favorite source for coins because you can see, handle and discuss coins all the while comparing dealer to dealer. If money were not an object I would go to all the big ones and not worry about the fact that I have to pay not only for my $500 hotel bill but for the bill of the dealer I am buying from. Enjoy the show.

Doug. Thank you for sharing your insite, knowledge, and experience. It is truly appreciated.

Ancientnoob, it would be great meet up at the show!

I am 95% sure that I am going. My wife has a biz event in NYC during the same time the show is happening. So the room will be on her companies dime. I need to find out more about her companies intinerary (I need to attend some company events).

I will probably be doing more window shopping than buying , but there is no way that I am missing the show if I am already in town! I hope to attend at least one educational seminar; that would be very cool! What a great coincindence the show is happening at the same time as biz trip!

Here is a PDF for another show:
