Last week I bought a coin identified as:

Constantine II. 316-340 AD. Æ follis (19 mm, 3.79 g). D N FL CL CONSTANTINVS NOB C - Laureate bust right, draped and cuirassed / IOVI CONSERVATORI CAESS - Jupiter standing left, holding Victory on a globe and scepter; captive and eagle at his feet. SMHA in exe., X over IIgamma in right field.. RIC 55 Heraclea .

I was wondering if someone could help me with a couple points I am having trouble with?

I can't seem to find any information on D N FL CL, what do these abbreviations mean?

And maybe a silly question, but is there any significance as to whether a bust/portrait is facing left of right.

Most everything else I have been able to come up with on my own.

Thanks in advance...

Looking at the pic, the detail on yours doesn't look quite as smooth. I don't know about counterfeits of these, but I think you may want to find out if it's authentic. There seem to be areas on your coin where the detail simply wasn't part of the striking.

I don't know what those letters mean specifically, but we have a number of ancient coin afficianados who will be able to help you, I'm sure.

"DN" is short for the Latin words "dominus noster", literally "our lord" - "lord" referring to the emperor.

"FL CL" are the abbreviations of the emperor's other names. His "full name" was Flavius Claudius Constantinus.

The coin is from the time he was Caesar or "junior emperor", 317-337 AD, as denoted by "NOB C" (noble caesar) after his name on your coin. As he was only 1 year old when he became Caesar, a time period 330-337 is probably more realistic.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

your coin is dated to 321-4 A.D.

on the reverse in the right field, the symbol II Mu means 12 and a half. These coins were issued as part of a coin reform by Licinius in his territories (mints of Heraclea, Nicomedia, Cyzicus, Antioch, and Alexandria) and were reduced in value (from 25 to 12 and a half). He struck these in the names of all the rulers but the reduction in value was not recognized outside his territories.

If you look at the last symbol in the right hand reverse field, you can see that it has a slash going up and to the right. I have posted one of my Constantine the Great coins that clearly shows the symbol.
