I was at the unveiling of the Afghanistan Memorial yesterday as well as the Parade today. As a retired serviceman, today is always a true day of reflection for me!

The Fallen were recognised when the pastor stopped his sermon, with the congregation standing for a minute in silence at church yesterday.

His sermon described the successful charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba. That action laid the way open to the freedom of Jerusalem for the first time in 400 years.

Infantry attack had repeatedly failed, but the machine gunnery and artillery of the Turks could not keep pace with speed of the charge of the horses. This action was instrumental in leading to the Balfour Declaration, and the establishment of the modern state if Israel in 1948.

This action by the Australian Light Horse was last significant and successful charge by massed cavalry in modern warfare.
