Where does the US government release the candidates for coin designs given to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts? I've seen them on other websites, but I'd like to get them straight from the government if I could. Is there a US Government website where they're released?

I sent an email to the Mint yesterday, so hopefully I'll get an answer on Monday.

Best place would probably be the press release site on the US Mint Website.

Jbuck, that link only shows the final approved coin designs, not the candidate designs. I'm referring to the images like these:

Coin-Design-Candidate-Location

that show designs produced by Mint artists that are reviewed by the committees but are not necessarily recommended to the Treasury Secretary. If those pictures are on that page, I could not find them. I haven't heard from the Mint yet, so I sent an email to one of the websites where I found the included image.

I have only ever seen the candidate coins on pages like these...

http://news.coinupdate.com/cfa-desi...-coins-1459/

I think they are only released by the committees, and not officially by the Mint or the Treasury.

I got a reply from one of the people who runs Coin Update, Michael Zielinski. He says:

They are not published on any govt website. They are distributed to the organizations that review them and the press.

So there it is. I guess they just give the pictures to the press who physically attend the meetings. Still, , but at least the design candidates are released to the public through the numismatic press instead of being buried in the Mint archives to be seen years later, if at all.

[edit: grammar]

Wait, those pit things at Chaco Culture are WALLS? I thought they were craters . . . obviously this was not well-executed.
