I don't have it in hand yet, but it will be my third coin of him and the one in best condition. Unlike many Roman AE4 bronzes of this era (5th century AD), it has a clear, centered obverse and a clear, nearly-centered reverse (mintmark is partly off-flan, but my guess it is from Nicomedia). This type was minted for Theodosius II between 425-435 AD. Theodosius II AE4 Obv: DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev: Cross within wreath SMNA (or B) in ex?, Nicomedia(?), RIC X 447, 12 mm wide Edited by VisigothKing 11/14/2012 6:12 pm

Yup, when I look at these little bronzes they remind me how much things had changed for the Romans, and not for the better. A very fascinating era to read about. Thanks for the comments guys!

I have a couple with a cross on the reverse but not enough detail on the obverse to know which emperor. That is a nice coin and well centered.

Hi Valiant I'm glad to see there is another person on here interested in stydying these late roman small coins. Your coin is very nice perhaps a bit too much cleaned(but someone also called this leather patina:-)) However for this period it's nearly a rarity find the bust all visible, remember how many marcian or leo are extremely raw and recognizable only by monograms. even worse in the Western empire, with coins of contemporary practically impossible to find.

Hello giano Quote: even worse in the Western empire, with coins of contemporary practically impossible to find One of two frustrations for me in collecting these late AE4s . Do you have any of the Western emperors after Valentinian III?

No I haven't. I was recently at an important numismatic conference , and I have seen beautiful specimens of johannes, anthemius, libius severus, putting aside some money in a few years maybe I can do a thought above these names:-))) I assure you that the mere seeing them in hand was a great satisfaction.I remember well a libius severus very very nice with ricimer monogram ,and the bust was completely visible without legenda, light green patina;really a great rare coin(and you can immagine the price....) after all, perhaps, about these coins, you can be happy to see them in museums or at conferences of great collectors.
