When doing type sets, should varieties be included? Or just one example from each series?

I am of the firm belief that you need to make that decision. After all, it is your collection.

I agree, you type set collection should be what you personally feel it should include.

I happen to like odd denomination coins like 2 cent, 3 cent and 20 cent pieces. I've considered starting a type set of 20 cent pieces U.S. and foreign. It would be a unusual type set, but it would be MY TYPE SET!!!

For myself it comes down to two choices: 1. my tastes and 2. my budget

One approach is to scale it and expand after accomplishing a milestone. For example you might first try for one example of each series. Once you completed that you can expand the set to major varieties and then once again for minor varieties if your budget allows for it.

In my short experience, it starts out 1 of each series and grows into 1 of each variety. If you sell them it depends on the buyer's opinion.

It is one of the great areas of collecting, because you (the collector) get to set the rules! No more being tied to filling that one hole with the impossible to get coin. You can make it a well-worn and traveled set, or a mint state set. Anything you want. I tend toward sets that "tell a historical story" such as "The coins of the Civil War" or "Califoria Gold" or (more pedestrian) "One hundred years before you were born."

Just let your imagination run wild.

I'm with Ken on this. Whatever you like and whatever you can afford.

It's your collection and you make the rules.

I've just begun a Type Set. Yesterday I purchased the third coin for it. Beyond the fact that I'm concentrating on EF-AU-ish stuff, for money reasons, there are no rules. I'll find out what sort of set it will be when I complete it, and look back on what has been done.
