A recent purchase... Septimius Severus denarius Obv:â€" IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG, Laureate head right Rev:â€" LEG I ITAL / TR P COS, Legionary eagle between two standards Minted in Rome. A.D. 193 Reference:â€" Cohen 257 (citing Wiczay). RIC 3 (Scarce citing Cohen). BMCRE p.21 noted as requiring confirmation (citing Cohen). Only 1 example in RD. A reverse die match to an example owned by Doug Smith which provides confirmation of the reading. Martin

'One in RD' but it is still tied with I ADIVT and I MIN as 'the common one' since they are all '1'. The rare one is what I call minus one - the die they omitted cutting the number on so it reads LEG ITAL. It is RD 0. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/do...legion1.htmlIt is not unusual to find legionaries that share obverse dies. I have a common LEG XIIII GEMMV (on my XIIII page) that uses the same obverse die as my LEG ITAL. I regret these things have become so expensive that my days of collecting them are pretty well over. The only ones I buy anymore are the super rare numbers when they are sold as just any legionary. Relatively few people would pay more for a Fine rare number than for an EF XIIII so there is still a chance for me to stock up.

This legionary was sold as a "Septimius denarius with unusual reverse" and priced at a very small premium above the remainder of the common Rome mint denarii around it. I cannot generally affort to obtain the legionary series at present as even the LEG XIII coins have gone out of my reach.
I was not looking for a legionary denarius when this turned up but grabbed it whilst I could. Oddly enough I have since bought two further legionary denarii of Septimius Severus, one from Alexandria, a LEG III IT AVG, to compliment the LEG III IT AVI that I already have and an Emesa example which from the II CO sub-issue. I will bore you with these when they arrive.

LEG III IT AVG is a really hard one. Mine is ex Bickford-Smith which makes it doubly important to me. I can not imagine how much more we would know about Septimius' coins had he not died before finishing his studies. The other Legionary that I like a lot is the early period Emesa with the 193 AD obverse legend but reverse legend LEG VIII AVG IICOS / TRP COS. Having the COS date repeated on the reverse is a bit odd and all the IICOS reverse coins are rare. I believe there is an Alexandria die with an error showing LEG IIII IT but the one I saw in a photo was so poor it was not certain. That is really rare: may not exist.

Those are wonderful. I would love to find the II COS type, which would fit with my small collection of II COS reverses nicely. I have 6 other II COS reverses but that one has eluded me. I have a fairly normal COS II - LEG XIIII in quite poor condition and a II C - LEG XIIII which I paid too much for. Martin

Well here I go. I have (finally) received my parcel. I will start with my first, new Legionary. This coin comes from a small, rare, set of coins that have somewhat unusual obverse legends. This coin has the IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II CO obverse legend (it is the II CO that makes it unusual), which is only known from this obverse die. All the coins from this obverse legend are rare. This obverse die is known to exist with 9 different reverses and this is my 6th type of the 9. This coin has a few oddities on the reverse legend with the AVO for AVG and the CR P COS for TR P COS. The coin is far from perfect but I am most happy with it. Oddly enough I tried to buy this coin on ebay over a year ago and was the 4th highest bidder with the coin reaching double what I was willing to pay for it. The purchaser has decided to part with his legionary eagle collection and I bought it from him for less that I wanted to pay when I first bid on it. Septimius Severus denarius - RIC - Obv:â€" IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II CO, Laureate head right Rev:- LEG VIII AVO (sic) ? CR P COS, Legionary eagle between two standards Minted in Emesa, A.D. 194 References:â€" Cohen -. BMC -. RIC -. RSC -. Possibly the third specimen known. The other examples are Oxford ex Walker, JNG 1978/1979, pl. 9, 4 which are both from the same die pair. Martin

Here is my second Legionary of the day. I would rate as Rare. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:â€" IMP CAE L S-EP SEV PERT AVG, Laureate head right Rev:â€" LEG III IT AVG, TR P COS in exergue, Legionary eagle between two standards Minted in Alexandria. A.D. 194 Reference:-- Cohen -. RIC -. BMCRE -. I haven't done any obverse die analysis yet to see how or if it ties into my other Alexandrian coin. Martin
