Being dated 2005 this is a quite hard to find error, although I already saw a few of the same year.

If you intend to sell, an auction (encan) is the best avenue.

Laloutre and Castor of NumisCanada can be trusted with their advice.

Although the pictures are not the best, the coin does look uncirculated and if it is a 2006 date with a gapped off-centre, then it should be worth more than say a 1996 or 1999. If your intent is to sell it, then given your location (east of Rimouski, QC) then you have two choices:

1. listing on ebay, start the bidding at $149.00
2. consign the coin to auction. I would recommend the June 2013 Bell auction, which gives you lots of time to have the coin certified by CCCS in a hard holder.

If your intent is to keep it, then for insurance reasons, value it at $250 - because I know a couple of collectors who would probably pay that much for that coin, sight unseen.

Yes, the coin is indeed beautiful and very desirable.

Any off centre with gap like yours after 2002 is uncommon.

That site is maintained by Patrick Glassford, a reputable numismatist but as it happens with catalogs, prices are an estimate.

If you search ebay you will find right now 3 coins dated 1996 with offcentres. They are priced from 80 dollars up to 300-something. They are on ebay for weeks and in one case for months - they will not sell at those prices. The last 1996 sold for a little less than 80.

ebay is not the best place to sell this coin. I would recommend you to put it on a reputable coin show auction. George Bell is one option, Louis Chevrier is the other - a reserve around 150 will protect you. Other option is direct sale to a collector. Following this thread there are at least 3 potential buyers.

Remember that not selling now is always an option. This type of error will be scarce and more valuable in a few years.

Following up the comments, this is probably the only Canadian auctioneer I would sell error coins in this price range at an auction - Geoffrey Bell Auctions. After long discussions at the September Bell auction at Coin Expo in Toronto, now several major Canadian error collectors consult with the Bells, to ensure that their error coins are properly described, and authentic - RCNA error columnist, Henry Nienhuis, t_y (on this forum) and myself are included in that list.

Massive errors, typically worth greater than $1000 are another animal entirely. They should be certified by NGC or PCGS and Heritage auctions seem to be the best venue for those.

Lastly and most importantly, if you like the coin, then keep it! After all, that is what makes us collectors...

Great decision!

(even if I would love to have this coin, I think it worth more to keep for now than to sell it)
