Hey guys,

Quite a while ago I purchased these coins depicting Charlemagne and Pepin the Short of the Carolingian dynasty. Since then I have been fascinated with these coins and I, assuming that they are part of a series have been unable to find any information on them.

Here are the coins:

If you have any knowledge or questions concerning these coins, please comment

Thanks,

I guess no one has any idea: I think they are medals rather than coins.

I have no idea either. I don't think I'll find your answer, but I have some questions that might help with the research:

Do you know the approx. size and weight?

Do you think they are pure silver 1 oz rounds? (Approx. same size as a Maple Leaf or Silver Eagle)

Are there any tiny markings indicating purity or manufacturer? They may be hidden on the edge, in the dots and dashes around the rim, or some other inconspicuous place.

At a glance I'd believe they are silver, but I've been fooled before. I wonder what series they'd be part of. I doubt they made every French King from 700s to 1700s, so it might be part of a 'Great Kings of Europe' or the Middle Ages or some such theme.

Thanks for the Tips Austrokiwi and Wheatiefan.

I took your advice and thoroughly examined the coin and noticed a few finer details.

A) Each coin, on the side of the face, has a tiny Fleur de Lis near the bottom, most likely a symbol of whatever series of medals or tokens they came from.

B) On the rim of each coin there is also information about the coin. It says .925 Sterling silver followed by a symbol that looks like the copy right symbol (c), followed by a small wide four sided diamond with what looks like the letters L and M with a spade between them. These details are so incredibly fine that its impossible to take a photograph with the equipment I have.

If any of you guys recognize this description, or even have a hunch, please comment. I am dying to find out where this medal/token came from.

Thanks again,
Solace-ian
