I used to have a tradition where I would go relic hunting on Thanksgiving morning. I haven't done much hunting in the past so I decided to revive my tradition. I knew it wasn't going to be the best of days when I fell over some barbed wire and landed on the detector, bending the arm cuff support. Luckily no damage to me or the Fisher. If a relic hunter falls in the woods would he make a sound? Yes, and I can't repeat the sound I yelled$#@*!.

This part of what I found:

There is a sterling silver earring and a homemade ring that looks like it was hand hammered. I think this one is brass.

My challenge for you guys is:
Who knows what this is, what it's from and what it's called? I know the answer, do you?

Is it a chess piece, perhaps carved from a bullet?

Not a chess piece. It was not carved. It is a brass finial but it served a purpose. I'll post the answer in the near future.

Hi! The phantom piece you have is a high end pellet for a pellet rifle. These are typically used in a bolt action rifle and are generally used for precision target shooting. Enjoy!

twilson,

You my friend, are incorrect. I'm not looking for somebody to tell me what I have. I'm looking to see if anybody else knows what I have. This is not a pellet for a rifle. It served a very specific function.

Hint: They were seen and used on many early military related objects.

BenByfield,

You my friend, are correct. The rounded ones are known as Samuel Browne Studs (his wife says otherwise). I've dug rounded ones and acorn ones too. They were used on a flap holster, cartridge boxes, primer pouches and other leather goods that needed a flap or strap held down. All too often, a soldier would reach down and pull the strap and send the finial flying out into the stratosphere.

oih82w8t,

You got a point for being creative.
