I'm looking for a listing of the value of the Birds of Canada series. I found the following list in an online listing from a coin dealer recommended to me by a friend:

Colourized 25-Cents Birds of Canada

2007 - Ruby Throated Hummingbird [104.95]
2007 - Red-Breasted Nuthatch [349.95]
2008 - Downy Woodpecker [169.95]
2008 - Northern Cardinal [279.95]
2010 - Goldfinch [139.95]
2010 - Blue Jay [54.95]
2011 - Barn Swallow [39.95]
2011 - Black-Capped Chickadee [34.95]
2012 - Rose-Breasted Grosbeak 29.95
2012 - Evening Grosbeak 29.95

I tend to believe it's at least reasonably accurate for a couple of reasons.

Firstly because they don't actually have any of them in stock at the moment, with the exception of the two grosbeaks and so they are presumably offering it as a guideline. The grosbeaks prices are identical to what the Mint lists them for, which lends a little more believability (is that a word?) to the list.

Secondly, the prices do seem to be at least somewhat in line with what most of them go for in ebay auction. (The goldfinch is perhaps an exception--often more expensive in final auction costs.)

Not to say all ebay items are in this range. Heck, one seller wanted over 400 bucks for the Barn Swallow coin! (Hello? How gullible do you think we are?) The "buy it now" choices are often overpriced, but that was a really bad outlier.

So, is there a good source to confirm or refute this? (The Charlton list doesn't help at all.) I'm OK with bidding up to what I consider to be fair, but not sure if I really have a good grounding on what fair is!
If you don't have an actual source, I'd be interested in your opinions, as I can see there is a great deal of expertise in the forum members.

Looks fair. The nuthatch can be had for cheaper with more patience on ebay (<$300), the cardinal as well (<$250) and the barn swallow and chickadee should still be available here and there at around issue price. But, overall, it doesn't seem like the seller is gouging you.

I don't see the high demand for this series.

I collected the last 3 coins. But sold them all. I will pass this series.

My 2 cent.

Within the last month I bought a barn swallow with a pistol lighter for $40 CAD included shipping. Then I picked up the chickadee for $47 US included shipping. Two months ago I got a hummingbird of $75 US with shipping but no case/COA . So now I'm hunting for the blue jay and the others behind it. The jay so far isn't under a $100. Colonial has a grade chickadee on ebay for around $50, they have other graded bird coins too.

I know in 2012 the jay was going for $55,I'm kicking myself for not grabbing one. It is a very nice coin. The older bird coins rarely come to auction. It does take daily patience. Are there any your looking for? I know a couple seller for chickadee around $45-55.

This looks pretty fair to me. Two years ago I bought my Chickadee and Barn Swallow for about $40 each but just earlier this yest my sister paid $50 for her Chickadee. I notice that the prices tend to fluctuate. I bought my Blue Jay for about $70 earlier this year, and then I watched two separate auctions on ebay rise over $90. Last year I saw the Nuthatch go for $400, but this year I saw an auction that ended at $310 (still too high for my wallet).

My point is that the prices can fluctuate depending on the interest at that particular time or how interested the buyer is. Just don't put this one thinking a better price might come along, because sometimes that better price never shows up.

@snoopy Yeah, when I found the Blue Jay coin for that price I bought it in a heart-beat because I knew I wouldn't find it that low anytime soon. Just recently, I've seen the Robin coin selling for $35-$40, while the two grosbeaks are still going for issue price. Interesting how that works.

I need to keep my eye on all deals.

Robin has lower mintage. It could be the reason.

thanks for the info, I had never gotten around to checking on this series. I have 3 coins, and always wondered what it would take to complete the set (i personally prefer to have complete sets, just feels incomplete otherwise). Now to decide if I have the $900 or so to get the 7 missing coins or sell the 3 I did get. all a matter of which side of my OCD inner voice I listen to.

@adambur If you only have 3 coins, you're going to need 9 more. The 10 listed above, along with two more from 2013 - American Robin and Barn Owl. You can still get the Barn Owl from the Mint:

@snoopy I think lower mintage as some to do with it, but I also think it is partly because the robin is beautiful. The Barn Owl has the same mintage as the Robin, but still isn't sold out. The Robin is one of the prettiest coins in the Bird Series, IMO.

I agree that the Robin is one of the nicest. But the Grosbeaks are also very nice coins. Sometimes you look at one and think its your favorite and then look at another and see something else appealing. This is a very nice series for sure.

I am looking for the first 4, Yikes is all I have to say. But congrats to all who have them!

I like the Woodpecker and Cardinal the most, but I'm too late to get into this series.
