Hello, I'm new to the forum and quite new to coin collecting. I inherited a small collection of about 1000 coins and am trying to identify them. I came across this particular one that I'm having a hard time to identify. I'd like to know what year it could be from.

to CCF CarlosGuardia! You have definitely come to the right place.

I like Japanese coins but am just a beginner. Your coin is unlike any I have seen, and I looked through my reference book without finding a match.

I do not think it is a Japanese coin. So some other options are that it is a coin from another Asian country or province, or it is not a coin at all but rather a token or something. It looks machine struck, so that dates it to the late 1800s at the earliest.

Some of the characters look familiar. The side with two symbols I have seen translated as 'one cash' or 'one mil' but google couldn't help me find any matches.

I'm sure one of our other members can translate the characters and that's what will probably provide a definitive ID. I have cropped and zoomed and rotated your image to help with that (I hope you don't mind):

I would also like to say that those rusted staples concern me. This coin looks fine, but check your other coins to see if there's any corrosion or discoloration or anything related to them.

I look forward to seeing other coins from your collection,

It is a Chinese coin and a similar coin may be seen at this Chinese website.

The inscription reads da qing tong bi (大æ¸.eŠ.å¹£) and the denomination is "one wen" (一æ-‡).

The coin was produced at the Tianjin mint in the third year of the reign of the Xuantong Emperor which would be the year 1912.

The Xuantong Emperor is also known as Puyi and as "The Last Emperor".

The Chinese empire collapsed in 1912 which means there would be very few authentic coins from this year.

There are many reproductions of this coin.
