Just found one of these circulating in Australia.

As I understand, these were issued just before all of them were withdrawn and melted down in 2006. From what I've found, very few of the 5c were released, and they are considered rare.

Is it a similar case with the 10 cent, or were they massively hoarded?

Its a long story. When the coinage changed there was an immediate response as every one thought that the 5 cent was very rare. What ensued was a Coin collectors rampage and the price went up.....only to collapse when some bank bags returned from Europe.. it seems a good proportion of the 2004 5 cent pieces escaped destruction. Current value NZ$5.00. The 10 cent was less rare and only has a catalogue value of about NZ$4.00. The rarer beastie to find is the 2005 10 cent once the hang over from the 2004 5 cent feeding frenzy wears out there is considerable room for appreciation in value. Current value is NZ$80.00. With an estimate of only 28000 issued ( the rest destroyed)

Thanks for the detailed synopsis!
While I may not have hit the jackpot, for the AU10c outlay I think I'll hold onto it and hope I find a 2005 one to go with it - it's strange to think these orphan coins still circulate in a different country...
