No, not that kind of double eagle! An ancient Egyptian double eagle to be exact. Yeah I went for the second best (lower-budget) coin when I found out the one I presented earlier had already been sold, and while not as well-preserved as the previous coin it is still IMO pretty nice-looking. Paid $43 total for it and while some of you may think it is a bit high, I'm pretty sure I didn't overpay by alot (I mean, everyone's overpaid by a little at least once, right?) and it looks like one of those coins that look better in hand than in the photo. Plus I'm planning to sell a few US coins (which I don't collect anymore) to recoup the money. This will be my first coin of the Ptolemaic Kingdom.

The two eagles on the reverse symbolize the joint rule of the brothers Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII.

Ptolemy VI Philometor and Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II

Obv: Zeus Ammon, head right
Rev: BASILEWS PTOLEMAIOU, two eagles standing side-by-side left on a thunderbolt, cornucopiae in left field, minted sometime between 170-164 BC, Alexandria mint
Ref: Svoronos 1424

Width: 30.2mm
Weight: 22.288g

From my experience with photos, I believe you are right about this. Some coins are hard to photograph. When it arrives, your job is to try to improve on this image.

VK: Your map references are excellent! What is your source for these?

Some MANY years ago, there was a group of about 10 large Ptolemaic bronzes available in reasonably nice condition, that I came across at a coin show, for $10 each. I did not buy one, because I was only into strictly Roman Imperial at the time. In latter years, I have come to regret that failure to buy.

Is there any ancient or modern source that says what species of eagle is on the reverse? I'm guessing it's the Golden Eagle, the same species on the modern Egyptian flag.

As a bird lover and owner, naturally I am left wondering about this.

Very nice!

And I enjoy the map with it as well. I don't have to think too much about where it's from.

Lovely coin!

As to the species of the eagle, it is tricky, since the eagle appears on some Seleucid coinage, and even Armenian coinage of that era.
We can only assume that it is a hallmark of the Diadochi era.

As you know, the eagle represents Zeus, and the Romans later use the eagle to represent Jove/Jupiter.
