My husband is an avid metal detector and often finds old coins that he has started collecting. For Christmas I wanted to get him some supplies to assist him in this added hobby. Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be good to buy for him?

He has the 2011 official red coin book. I saw online there is a new 2013 version as well as a professional version. Is there enough of a change in the book from 2011 to 2013? Is the professional version useful?

I was browsing on the wizard supply website and saw coin cleaning products. Many of the coins he finds have been in the ground for a long time and are not in the best of conditions. I know that cleaning a coin isn't generally recommended but are there any products that anyone would recommend for really beat up coins?

I would very much appreciate any and all suggestions anyone can provide.

For my personal use, I was not planning on getting the 2013 Red Book. The only thing I see changing in the edition besides adding a few modern coins such as the newest America the Beautiful Quarters would be prices, but one can get a good idea on prices from here:

The professional version I would say is for one who has a few years in the hobby, as it goes into too great of detail and contains information a new collector wouldn't use (myself included).

Instead if you are buying supplies, get him a nice loupe or a few with different levels of magnifications.

And as far as cleaning... I also say don't clean... but others might have different advice.

Welcome to CC!

Don't bother with the newer Red Book if he already has one. A 2011 edition is good enough for what he's doing.

As far as cleaning, as a detectorist, I'm sure he already knows what to do and he probably already has everything he needs. I recommend you buy him something related to detecting rather than coins. He'd probably appreciate it more.

In most cases detectorists have little choice but to clean. You either have an unrecognizable lump of junk or something you can actually read.

I would suggest he learn about electrolysis if he doesn't already use it. As far a supplies go, I say assorted sizes of the cardboard 2x2's, a flat clinch stapler which can be purchased at Staple's for around $10, and maybe some good quality 20 pocket 2x2 pages and a binder to put them in. These items will help him organize his coins. I would also like to add that it is good that you are supporting him in 2 hobbies that the main stream populace tends to make fun of. That in itself is a great gift.

I would suggest a multi magnifying, possibly a microscope.. And something that you both may enjoy, a camera with a good macro function.

As to the Red Book, don't bother getting a new one just yet. Every year a new edition comes out in early April meaning a 2014 edition will be out in about 4 Months anyway. I collect the Hard Covered Red Book and have all from the first to present. I use the 2010 of prices since that is the closest to realistic values, not the newer ones.
Since he is new I'd suggest getting simple things first in case he looses interest. For example try Walmart of Kmart for a series of magnifying glasses of different powers. Look for one of those jewlers types of about 8 to 10 power if possible. There is a web site called Wizard coin supply that many say have the best prices. I would suggest you look them up and order a supply of 2x2 flips of different sizes. They are for placing one coin at a time in them and sealing. If you can find a hobby store or coin shop in your area, might be fun to check out what they carry in the way of supplies. Same with any used or new book stores. Any books on coins is worth the cost is he keeps up the intersst but if the iterest fades, just a lot of things on a book shelf. Still good for a tax right off if donated to the Salvation army.
Cleaning coins is basically a no, no. However, a gallon of Distilled water is a start for something that will not do any damage. Do not buy any coin cleaning products since in most instances they do more damage than good. Althoug rather on the dangerous side, a solution called Acetone is almost a necessity for coins to get most of the STUFF off from the ground. It should be easily purchased at Walmart, Kmart, Menards, Home Depot or any place that carries paint supplies. Usually about $4 to $5 a Quart. Also, buy some safety glasses. For the use of Acetone, you may want to check out the Search tab at the top for that item.
The main thing to remember is he may be like many people that start a hobby and then it gets shelved. Don't get carried away buying to much stuff that will not be used to much.
