My new addition from the Frank Robinson sale was this better than average antoninianus of Quintillus. Brother of Claudius II, Quintillus decided to take power when Claudius died. The Senate agreed. Aurelian disagreed and Quintillus lasted about three months in 270 AD. He may be the most inconsequential and shortest reigning ruler whose coins can sell for under $100. In my time of collecting, this is the second one I have bought. Most are poorly struck ragged and part legend. This is far from perfect but good enough for me. Quintillus looked a lot like his brother but shows tightly curled hair. Probably his most important action as emperor was to request the deification of Claudius giving us that series of equally ragged and bad looking coins. Soon after the start of his reign, Aurelian improved the quality of coins issued so Quintillus is close to as bad as it got. Considering that, this coin is exceptional.

Nice coin, even better story. The history represented in coins holds a great deal of appeal for me.
Uh Oh, I think I'm coming down with an ancient coin bug. It's been creeping up on me for awhile, but hanging out with you fine folks seem to have set the infection. I'll always be grateful, just don't tell my wife.

Excellent Quintillus! Yes, they are difficult to find in that condition.
I think part of the reason for poor coinage was the fact that the current mint workers were stealing silver and probably didn't care much about quality. So, Aurelian had to deal with the only recorded mint uprising lead by the rationalis Felicissimus, mintmaster of Rome.

Doug that is a great Quintillus! I have been eying one at a local shop in about half as good of shape as yours. It has some eye appeal left, but the asking is $55.00. I think I will wait for a better one like yours.

A very nice example. Quality control seems to have been lacking on his output much as seems ti have been the case with many of the coins of C II G. Dies were used despite being very worn, flans were small, flat and eneven strikes abound. Having said all that the obverse dies are generally in better condition than the reverse dies leading to recognisable coins where part of the legend is missing etc. You coin has near full legends, a decent, almost central strike and a very strong portrait. Much, much better than the average Quintillus that we generally see. I have bought a handful over the year but have now parted with them all. This was the best that I had. A tight flan leading to a lack of complete legends but a reverse die that was used before becoming too worn. It was a single coins detectorist find in a field in West Wales. Martin

Here is one such example that is my coin and was also found in the UK. I had a hard time getting a decent scan out of it but it really does look a lot better in hand. One of these days I will get or borrow a decent camera and take a photo of it. But anyways, most of the legend is gone and the flan is small.
