So I recently sold some coins I had and now I have about $800 to spend on coins for my 7070. I think I want to knock out the Trade dollar slot right now. I'm trying to assemble the nicest set as possible, so for coins like this, I am going for the most common date so I can get one in better condition. I'm looking for something around AU55 or AU58. I am not familiar with this series but I know a lot are faked so I'm buying slabbed. However I'm not sure where prices currently are at with these. Here's an 1877 s AU58, I'm wanting opinions from those of you who are more knowledgeable. For a coin in this grade, what would be a good price to pay? Can be any date that is cheap, I just want something that looks similar to the one I posted. Also, do any of you have any extras you might sell? http://www.ebay.com/itm/40034284944....m1438.l2649

That ones prices are right in line what numismedia has them at, actually about 30 dollars below. The ebay completed listings had 2 that were AU58 sell in the mid 400s back in september and none since in auction but if you like the one you posted I would probably go ahead and get it

Nice coin. Less than $500 at Heritage. An NGC AU58 of this coin has *never* exceeded $500 there. I'm beginning to feel like a broken record, pushing people towards Heritage like this, but all I'm telling is the truth.
Especially in this price range, Heritage needs to be the first stop for every coin shopper. The only prerequisite is patience, which ought to be the #1 weapon in the arsenal of any collector, anyway.

Is heritage free to sign up for? And when you are bidding there, can you see what the final price will be with buyer premiums, or do you have to calculate it yourself? And can you use paypal. I might just start using them.

Lol, I just went to heritage to try to sign in using my username and password I always use and I logged in. I must have signed up there before. and I see it shows buyers premium. I'm going to look around and get used to the site.

Quote: Heritage needs to be the first stop for every coin shopper I wish I could buy from them, they wont let me link my credit card to bid though which is the only place I've ever had a problem with it. With how many places there are to buy from I dont feel I should have to jump through hoops to purchase from them. Yea I may be a little bitter

Thanks Dave. Looks like I will have to be patient. They don't have nearly as many coins for sale as ebay. So it may take months of searching. They also have a lot of problem coins. But looking at past auctions, you can get good prices, you just have to wait for the coin you want to pop up. I'm not patient, grrr, but I must be.

Well, it also lets you know what an appropriate price is for a coin offered elsewhere, so you can calculate a proper "immediate gratification" premium.

That's true. lol. And as far as shipping on HA, you pay that later, it isn't included in price right?

I can't see ebay listings at work, so I don't know what characteristics you are looking for. Doesn't matter. I believe that 1877-S is the most common and readily available, although the 1876-S is the least expensive in AU55 $438 & AU58 $552 (numismedia FMV). I have discovered that there are lots of the NGC slabbed Trade dollars which have "issues" (improperly cleaned, primarily). Stick to "eye appeal" and you won't regret it. Watch out for the "Buyers Fees" at the big boy auction houses! I incorporate the "fees" (10 to 17.5%) into the bidding price along with the shipping (which usually runs about $7.00 per item). I have gotten a few decent deals on HA, S&B, GreatCollections and DLRC (no fees!). "David Lawrence Rare Coins (DLRC) Auctions announced today that they have eliminated buyer's fees in their online auctions. According to DLRC President, John Feigenbaum, "All of our auctions now have NO BUYER'S PREMIUM, so you simply 'Pay Only What You Bid.'"
This is seen as a groundbreaking move within the numismatic auction industry as these buyer's fees are a standard in the coin business. Feigenbaum continues, "Several of the largest auction companies have increased their buyer's premium to 17.5% and we've heard from a number of our clients that they are fed up with this unnecessary tax on their purchases. Eliminating buyer's fees simplifies the buying experience on our web site tremendously. It's exciting for us to make this change and deliver a simpler pricing structure to the complicated process of auction bidding." http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/...b9639257.htm

Quote: And as far as shipping on HA, you pay that later, it isn't included in price right? Yeah, that's calculated separately. Last coin I bought, it came to $8.15, but that was for Priority Mail and a couple hundred in insurance. Yeah, they made a dollar or two maybe but I didn't consider it usurious. My immediate reaction to that is, "OK, how are they making their vig now, then?" Did they just shift it completely onto the seller, and what would that do to a seller's willingness to list nice stuff with them? Are they going to start gouging on shipping? Don't get me wrong - I have a very high opinion of them - but you know they didn't just decide to abandon profitability.

please don't go by numismedia, greysheet, etc. Just use ebay completed search, coinfacts, etc as they will give you a price what some have recently sold for. For some coins, you need to toss greysheet and other guides out the window

So Dave, when looking at an auction on HA, it says: Quote: Bidding Begins: Approx. December 21, 2012 Auction Dates: January 9-13, 2013 What exactly does that mean? If you can start bidding on the 21st ofdecember, what is the january 9th to 13th mean?

I believe that this means that online bids are accepted first, then the item goes to the floor for bids. This happened at the last auction from HA.com that I participated in.
There are times when the online bid is so high that the floor does not receive any bids.
