I have noticed that most of the ebay auctions for PCGS/NGC coins ends significantly lower than the TPG price guides for these coins.

I understand that ebay prices are not full retail, but usually coins sell for 20-30% under the price guide.

How does PCGS/NGC comes up with their prices?

Not all slabbed coins are the same so prices will vary. For example, look at all MS67 Walking Liberty coins from a given year. Use ebay, Heritage Auctions, Collectors Corner, etc. You will me amazed how different the coins will be. Some will not look like 67's and others will look like 68's. Quality will cost you and lesser quality will sell at a discount. It has been my experience that often the coins shown on ebay are the lower quality coins within a grade. The best ones stay in collections or show up at the big shows or big dealer sites. I believe the prices are from auctions over time. One low sale does not cause a drop.

I am always amazed at the difference between the guide prices at PCGS and NGC but then it is easier and cheaper to get a coin graded by NGC then PCGS. I say this from experience with Walkers. If it is different with other coins I stand corrected. It is very hard to get PCGS to slab a 1945D or 1946D in MS67 but NGC does it often. There are huge populations differences.

In general what you see on RedBook, pcgs guides, ngc guides, etc are not accurate and coins won't go for that much. However there are some series that go for much more.

It goes both ways on almost any type of auction and have lost count of the number of TPG coins that result in the final bid of the coin selling for double (and higher) the catalog value...

Then put the green CAC sticker on it and watch the price soar.

After going over a few dozen auctions, only 1 of which ended significantly over the TPG guide price, a few ended around the price and most of them ended significantly lower.

Does PCGS/NGC compute some mean price for their guide from auctions or just stating retails price for the coins?

Does it mean that the coins on ebay are significantly below the average for the grade?
(I'd assume that since it's an auction, you can sell a higher end coin and get its worth if you have some decent pics).

Some are some arent. Just because its on ebay doesn't mean that its at the low end. Theres a lot of cac coins on ebay and non cac that look beautiful and are strong to upper end examples of their grade, even a few that are worth 100s of thousands. It all depends on the individual listing

Both the price guides tend to be inflated. Who knows, maybe they take the ebay sales and add 20 - 30%.
