Remember this material when people tell you coins must never be cleaned. In a while we will see the coins again. They will look different. Does anyone know who bears the cost of this conservation? Does the BM subtract a fee for their services before paying the finder/landowner for what they keep or is this a service of the Crown? It would seem that a hoard of 15000 coins of that period would include many with a very low market value and the cost of detailed conservation (many steps before actual cleaning begins) could exceed the value of the hoard unless they find treasures inside like the Carausius coins in the Frome Hoard. The work has to be done before they can know if there is another Domitian II inside (or a hundred of them). It is rather like a lottery with very dirty tickets.

I too was wondering this, I found the following and it looks like the BM pay for cleaning, preservation and study through private backers / donations and must believe the info gained from doing it is a fair exchange. I would also guess they have temporary exhibits of the items to generate interest at the museum.

In the meantime the coins have been washed and stabilised by a team of conservators at the British Museum, led by Pippa Pearce, and they are being studied by Roger Bland and the Portable Antiquities Scheme's Roman coins specialist, Sam Moorhead. The British Museum is actively seeking funds to clean the coins fully: this will be a year's work for one conservator.

The last time I was there they had a small display of the Staffordshire Hoard Saxon gold which I know for sure had some cleaning work done there.

The treasure laws are pretty good now and if you find something you can basically report it and let others do all the work while you just wait for your cheque to arrive. They will excavate it, clean it, attribute it and value it.

I consider myself to be an honest, law abiding person, but I'm not so sure what I might do if I found a stash of coins and antiques like this. Could I or would I follow the law or.....

I know what you mean JW, difficult to know what would go through your mind as you stood in a muddy field surrounded by ancient coins!

I think in the past so much stuff was lost to science this way that the Government and the museums realised if they ever wanted anything to be reported they had to make the system so easy and so rewarding that everybody trusted it. Maybe its all just media spin but on the surface the system seems fair and simple, if a little slow.

I'm also an honest person, but it would be very tempting to grab some coins for myself before turning the rest over to the government. Too bad here in the US no hoards like this exist, it would be nice to go digging in the backyard and finding a 15,000 ancient coin hoard.
