Hello! after many years of trying I think I have finally managed to get my Father to collect coins... He's taken a real liking to my small collection of Ancients. I am now considering purchasing him a Roman coin for Christmas instead of the usual "pair of socks and a t-shirt". I spotted this nice Carausius and his brothers coin with three heads on and am now thinking about purchasing this one for him. I tried a bit of Googling to find out the value of a coin like this but turned up very little. Judging from the pictures below and the detail on the coin would anyone be able to give me a rough estimation as to how much a coin like this is worth?

I'm about as far from an expert on Roman coins as a numismatist could possibly be, but this seems to be an incredibly rare coin worth on the order of $1000+ (maybe more). As such, what you have is likely a fake or a copy

Wow, thanks you for the responses. I'm quite shocked, I'm so glad I didn't go and blow 20 or so pounds on a replica piece. The guy has some more lots for sale, would you mind if I was to show you them to see if there are any fakes in those lots?

The guys above are correct, even in poor condition these fetch $1000, the second one Martin posted is worth in the order of $50000. They are not common coins and much sought after, show us more pics of his other offerings I suspect many will be dodgy!

We've actually talked about this particular coin a long time ago. Way too many fakes for me to feel comfortable buying one. Besides, if the price seems too good to be true (20 GBP in this case) then it probably is.

Quote:on a different note, picked up a nice Quintillus off ebay yesterday for £5 Good work I wanna see a picture Nothing scares me in the above pictures, indeed two of the lots contain pretty nice Probus coins, one of them showing Sol on a chariot, looks like the reverse could be very nice indeed.

I believe a proper fake of the triple portrait might be worth 20 pounds but this one does not capture the portraits of the three (especially Carausius) and has been butchered to make it appear old. That is where it stops being desirable as a space filler and starts being a piece of trash. There was a time where it was acceptable to include in ones collection openly acknowledged fakes of things we all know we can't have. This was the theory that brought us the Renaissance copies we call Paduans which can be worth nearly as much as the coins they copied. The problem came later when someone discovered that there were people out there that could be fooled into thinking that they were lucky enough to get a $50k coin for $50. I would love to know how much the seller here paid for the coin.

Ok, I'll get some pictures up of the quintillus up in one sec. It also has a Portable Antiquities Scheme report which is good if, if you go onto Finds.org.uk and search the database for LEIC-0DC477 you will find it. The picture on the report are terrible; The coin in hand is really nice and has been struck using a deep die.

http://finds.org.uk/database/artefa...rd/id/515326Now that is cool - I love having find info, any Quintillus for a fiver is a bargain, with the above provenience to me it rivals your Florian for value. You certainly get to wear the CCF bargain hunter crown for a while now I'm sure I have a coin on finds.org but would have to dig out the info, its a Tretricus I think.

I always think it is nice knowing where a coin was found, especially if it was in the UK. I looked on the Imperium map of where it was found and it is right next to a roman road which is interesting. I seem to be on a bit of a buying streak at the moment; its the first bit of luck I've had in a while! I still prefer the Florian (I'll get it Monday.)over this IMO however the Quintillus feels so nice in hand. This is the auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROMAN-COIN-...p=true&rt=ncHere are some pictures(two of each side with slightly different lighting.)...

Quote: its the first bit of luck I've had in a while! If your able to keep buying like this and your a good seller you could make a bit of cash flipping (excuse the pun) coins on ebay Quote: I suspect many will be dodgy! I was right SEPTIMIUS HERODES - fake PROCULUS - fake 'COINS LOT SILVER' - very fake, all 4! TACITUS - very probably fake but only 99% sure. I suspect all his other antiquities are also reproductions. His name looks Bulgarian but he is based in London, probably works over here but has people who send him this crap from Bulgaria or travels and brings it with him. His Carausius titled 'BRONZE ANTONIAN 3 A.D. 21mm' (for those who want to search for his offerings) is now up to £206.11 with 25 mins to go. I fear a coin collectors special Christmas present from a loved one may disappoint on the 25th

For those of us here who have trouble spotting fake coins this seller is the textbook example of somebody not to trust when buying coins. He is ringing so many bells he could be a campanologist.
1. He is selling valuable coins but seems to know little or nothing about them.
2. Descriptions about quality and patina are wrong, so are many attributions.
3. His feedback is low and kept private, half of his feedback is from this month alone.
4. He is using at least 1 shill bidding account with a feedback of 37 and 100% bids on his stuff.
5. I hate to say this as we have at least two nice guys on here from Bulgaria whose coins I love to see but when a link from a seller is suspected to Bulgaria you must scrutinize the coins more.
6. He has included a few low value genuine coins (the lots shown above) as an after-thought just to make the rest of his stuff seem more authentic.
Even if you cant spot fake coins, when you see stuff like the above run for the hills! This guy will probably make a few quid for Christmas then have his account frozen and disappear.

Haha, I didn't realize this guy was so dodgy, I bought a group of coins off him a few days ago and everything seemed good with them, they were only the common stuff such as Crispus, Constantine etc however. My Mother was going to buy the second lots pictured above as a Christmas present for me, do you reckon I'll be safe in buying them? The funny thing was I didn't realize how close he lived to me! I payed £5.50 for next day delivery and he's only 6 minutes down the road, I live in post code EN1 he's EN3. I would also like to say thank you again Bobby, if it wasn't for you a newbie like me would have a nice collection full of knock-offs from Bulgaria. Luckily I have only made one purchase from this seller.
