There is another variety missing from the 7070. For the late issues of the cap bust half there is the "50 cents" and the "half dol."

I don't know 'why' but in reading found that Assistant Engraver Christian Gobrecht was responsible for the changes. Sorry, not much help...

When Christian Golbrecht updated the Capped Bust half dollar design for the 1836 "reeded edge" coins (from the previous John Reich "lettered edge" design), he saw fit to simplify the design and delete the E PLURIBUS UNUM banner. I've never seen a reason why published.
