It says "smoothed" right on the slab. What does that mean?

NGC Details Grading

Quote:
TOOLED refers to either the smoothing of a coin's fields to remove scratches, corrosion and other forms of damage or to the restoration of lost details through use of a graver or knife. When a single side of the coin is affected, the terms OBV TOOLED and REV TOOLED are used.

SMOOTHING is akin to Tooling, but it is used when the exact means of achieving the described effect is unknown.

The coin would have ended up in a details graded slab anyways so who ever tooled or smoothed it must have figured they have nothing to lose unless is was tooled or smoothed 50 years ago before TPG's in an effort to fool someone.

Hi Steve, still looking for that elusive 1916 SLQ ?
I saw this one on ebay and wondered the same thing.
Thanks for asking the question.

I figured it was something like that but I had never encountered that specific term. Anyway, thanks y'all!

I got to see a PCGS MS65 1916 SLQ in a dealers case at a show a year ago. The case only had maybe 10 other slabs in it and I didn't even bother to look at them as I was mesmerized by it but looking back I can only assume that they were of equal high grade and rarity.

I didn't even dare to ask to hold it or ask the price but was content to have been blessed with seeing it at the right time at the right place.
