I'm talking about the bronze "Authorized by Act of Congress" medals, such as Jewish americans, jazz musicians, sports legends, etc. Does any have any information on where to find a good comprehensive (I understand there are hundreds if not thousands of these things) list of what has been produced as of now?

Here's a link to a PDF of a report produced for the US Senate that discusses and lists the awarded Congressional Gold Medals. As you'll see, they're aren't nearly as many as you have thought.

Most (if not all) have been available as a bronze re-strike at one time or another, but the US Mint does not keep many of them "in stock" anymore for collectors -- only the most popular and the more recent.

Thanks commems, that list is fantastic (and slightly less daunting than I originally expected).

Are there any other more complete/recent listings of US mint medals? Would every medal issued by Congress be recreated by the Mint?
