With the holidays coming up, I thought I would do something a little different. Instead of there being a prize for the winner, I will donate $25 to a charity of the winner's choice (so long as the charity helps people out around the holidays). Since this is holiday themed, I am going to put a December 24th Midnight EST deadline on solving this though. If it remains unsolved, I will donate to my local food bank.

I hope the spirit of giving sparks some interest in this puzzle. I will try to answer any questions you ask as quickly as I can.

I'm trying to teach the cavemen to play Scrabble. It's uphill work. the only word they know is 'unh', and they don't know how to spell it.

22 words

No weeds.

I realized that the website I took this from had a typo. I am not correcting the code to account for the typo, because I don't know if the encryption method will work as well with the correction.

Questions will be important to solving this one, so please people, ask away!

Is it a straight substitution cipher?

If not, and if there is a key, can you divulge the key length?

I had already tried an additive and subtractive Vigenere Cipher to no use.

Is this something different than a Vigenere Cipher?

I tried a few things and got nowhere. Are we supposed to apply one letter of the key to each quadrant?

Also, are the quadrants simply created by taking the first 9 characters of the first three rows and putting them in the top left quadrant, and so forth, or is it more complicated than that?

Yes

Just as you described, nothing more to it.

Is the key "NOEL"?

If so, is the "N" applied to the top left quadrant?
