hi guys,
I'm lost on one again. the seller listed this as...
"Maximianus I as caesar antoninianus. Rome"

here it is..

Help-ID-Please

Help-ID-Please

the obverse lettering is either...

MAXIMINVSNOBCAES

or
MAXIMINVSNOBCAESAR

so maximinius ii, but no match there....going through the helvitica sheets I get...

Galerius
MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES
VOT XX theta
Rome RIC VI Rome 88b
scarce mintmark is the letter on the third line

so am I correct here? that was confusing as heck to me. only cost me about 7 bucks with shipping, so I like it whatever it is.

...ok,now I'm even more confused, found a web page that has this info for the coin..

(click image to see larger picture)

"Galerius caesar

- - "struck by Maximianus

Rome, 297-298

obv.- MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES; radiate bust right

rev.- VOT XX; inscription in wreath; theta in ex

RIC VI Rom 88b; Fail 023

20mm; 2.9g; half-nummus"

here's the page...

towards the bottomish.

I have to disagree, I think you were correct with:

Galerius
MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES
VOT XX theta
Rome RIC VI Rome 88b

Ignore the 'Galerius caesar struck by Maximianus' thing, I think this is just to signify that the coin was struck in the part of the Empire that was not under Diocletians control. Galerius was Diocletians Caesar where as Maximian was Augustus in the west.

This probably could do with a better explanation but not got the time right now, sorry.

After May 305:

Western Empire was Maximian (Augustus) and Constantius (Caesar)
Eastern Empire was Diocletian (Augustus) and Galerius (Caesar)

It was a deliberate and co-operative split.

Your coin was made in Rome showing Galerius but technically Rome (Western Empire) was ruled by Maximian, hence the 'struck by' phrasing - hopefully thats a bit clearer

The legends can be a bit confusing between Galerius and Maximian. This one in particular because there really isn't a complete legend visable. However I agree with BH that it's Galerius.

The Tetrarchy issued coins from most mints for all four rulers so there is nothing odd about a Western coin for an Eastern Caesar. At this period the four got along well and did reciprocal coins. There are times later when Constantine and Licinius issued coins for each other for a while and then stopped due to periods of bad feelings or warfare so there are some issues really rare for one and common for the other but I believe the idea of a ruler issuing coins for another is overstating the matter. Usually the mint issued coins for all legitimate rulers. The noteworthy exception is when coins were issued by a usurper in the name of the legitimate ruler as when Carausius did Diocletian and Maximianus antoniniani with the reverses ending in AVGGG suggesting the empire had three emperors.

We have to be careful to read the presence or absence of the A that separates Maximianus from Maximinus. Yes, I do have a page:
