Hello!
I am new to the Coin World and am having trouble with some of the newer coins. I have a Dansco Kennedy album which has a space for a 1976S proof, a 1976S BU 40%, and 1 1976S proof 40%. My question: Are all BU 40%? How can I tell the difference between proof and 40% proof? Unless this is specified in an add this is confusing for me. Thanks!!

to CCF. There were 3 types of issues from the San Francisco mint in 1976. There were clad proof issue and 40% silver "circulation" and proof issues. The clad issue is like those from Philly and Denver mints and is composed of 25% nickel and 75% copper surrounding a core of 100% copper. The silver halves are 80% silver, 20 % copper surrounding a core of 79% copper and 21% silver.

The easiest way to tell them apart is looking at them, especially the rims. The silver coins will be brighter and don't appear to have a sandwich-like appearance. They will be similar to all 1965 through 1970 halves. Also you can weight them. the silver coins are 11.5 grams and the clad halves are 11.3 grams.

Hope this helps.
