Not sure how long it was in the ground but the zinc pennies never last. The clad change looks sad too. I had a bad day and found very little. My best score came from under a set of jungle gyms. I found 6 clad quarters, 3 clad dimes and two zinc pennies. The zinc penny you are looking at was found at a different location earlier today.

The chewed up penny is a 1983 and for comparison the better one is a 1984.

I find zinc pennies like that all the time. People in the future are going to wonder why we abruptly stopped minting pennies in 1982 because there won't be any left from later dates!

In related news, I got a Garrett Ace 250 for Christmas!

ancientcoinguy,

I try to do everthing in my power not to find these zinc pieces. That sounds like a candy treat from Mars. Zinc Pieces.

My main goal when I go relic hunting is to dig old stuff. If not, I'll move on to another site.

The older I get the more I feel like that penny looks.

Or it going to resemble the future of our country.
