Below is a before and an after photo of a 1908 IHC that I was advised to look after corrosion.

The treatment was a ten minute soak in acetone followed by a cue tip coat and swab using verdi-care three days later.

The results are interesting. The majority of green disappeared with the acetone bath.

Question: With all the tight judgement on cleaning, would a treatment such as this be acceptable to the coin community?

Thanks,
Terry McManus

Nice! What a difference. I don't know about others but to me , you have saved some history. The corrosion would have been progressive. I think you were doing conservation, not cleaning.
I'm sure others will chime in with their opinions!

Nice job. You didn't clean the coin, you preserved it. That green slime would have just kept eating into the surface.

I think you did a good thing. There is a huge difference between this and attacking the coin with acid or a wire brush.

Looks to me like you did a great job preserving this coin.

I agree with all of the above. Stopping corrosion is different from, what is typically meant by; cleaning. That coin would have eventually been eaten through with corrosion at some point in the future.

I've never seen a before and after example of the method. Now that I have, I'm gonna give it a try. Think I'll find a cruddy ole piece and acid bath it just for the experience. Thanks for the edgy-ma-cation!

Ummm, why? We all know acid is NOT a good thing for copper coins. The OP used acetone, not acid.

Tj, definitely NOT "cleaning" the coin. Not even close or able to be construed as such. Awesome job of fixing that coin up right.

I like it! Looks much better imo. I am a huge proponent of the exact method you used.
