At this time of year the TV is filled with reviews of the top happenings of the year about to close. Certainly prominent is the list of famous people who died this year and coverage of major stories like the election and disasters. I'll start this thread to show three coins. One is my favorite expensive acquisition of 2012 (Crispus), my favorite cheapie (Macedon Provincial with Alexander the Great) and my overall favorite of the year (Magnentius flip over brockage) which just happened to have come to me as a trade from someone you know. They were discussed back when they were new (as I suspect will be the case with your coins filling these slots. Not shown are the rest of the 142 coins that came here to live in 2012. The year produced a larger than average number of coins but a smaller than average price per coin. I'm getting cheaper as the days go by. I invite you to add your "Tops of 12". I suspect most of yours will be prettier and more costly. Time to admit it...

Great Thread Doug! AncientNoob's Year 2012 in review! Favorite Cheapo Ashoka Punch Mark Coins India, The Mauryan Empire Ashoka the Great 304-232 BC c. 272-232 BC AR Drachm; Ujjain Mint 18mm x 13mm @ 2.84g Obverse: Punch Marks Reverse: More Punch Marks These were very inexpensive, yet they are attributed to a powerful and famous ruler. These opened a new collection sphere for me. This made me rethink what I thought a great coin should be. Most Expensive Favorite $275 Lifetime Alexander Tetradrachm 16.96g c.325 BC ref# Price 210 I always wanted one of these and always thought they would be out of reach for my very short arms. This coin gives credence to the quality of what can be found on the bottom of the bay. My Favortie Overall Attambelos I (c. BC 47-24) AR 27.6mm Tetradrachm (12.41g) c.BC 44-40 Obverse: Diademed bust of Attambelos Reverse: Hercules on stool, holding famous club. BASIL? ATTAMB? O THP (The Seleucid date is lost to time, it would have been located in exergue.) I never saw one of these before I got it. I can't say as I ever looked though. The coin is what I like about coins. It has a great portiret and some what familiar reverse, yet the coin is completely foreign. The coin is from what is now modern Kuwait, and I think thats neat. I have seen a few for sale for hundreds above what I paid and there for I consider it a major victory for my collection.

Well I started the year with no ancient coins and bought a few nice banknotes to get my British signaturies collection and my American all denominations, all colour seals collection nearly complete. (just a few notes to buy but the American ones I cant find sellers who ship to the UK and the British ones I need are fairly cheap and easy notes I hope to pick up in one batch in a coin show or shop given the chance) So for my foray into ancients I bought a few coins... the highlights of which would be Alexander III tetradrachm, Owl Tetradrachm and Corinth silver stater. I have many idea's for how my collection will build but I am thinking I only have a limited window in which I should be spending my money on coins. Therefore my plan only stretches as far as about another 20 coins... Anyway here are my highlights... Corinth stater Thrace drachm Owl Tetradrachm Alexander III drachm Alexander III tetradrachm

Most of my highlights have been Severan denarii. I won't bore you with them all but here are a few that were my highlights. Alexandria:- Emesa AVG II C with a II COS reverse:- Emesa with an obverse of Septimius paired with a Julia Domna reverse:- Laodicea (a very rare obverse legend variety):- Not everything was Severan.... I managed a couple of other things too.... A few additions to my Probus collection of Lugdunum (a scarcer reverse type) A couple of additions to my Eastern Mints Hadrian collection crept in too.....this one having a rare bust type for the eastern mints Martin

I fail to get too excited with these Roman ones in general but I must say the Emesa AVG II C has lots of eye appeal ^^ All those are decent coins but for some reason that one just strikes me.
Ancientnoobs tets made my mouth water lots too ^^
Its interesting how different people develop their collection in different directions influenced by many factors including budgets, interests, collecting goals and random chance of what comes their way; some are specialising, some being diverse and all being drawn by different criteria.

Quote: but I must say the Emesa AVG II C has lots of eye appeal My experience is that only about half of the Severus specialists appreciate the abilities shown by at least one of the early Emesa cutters. This coin, of course, also benefits from being high grade but every so often there may just be a coin where the only surviving specimen happens to be EF. Overall it seems like a pretty good year for several of us.

I'd have to say that 2012 seemed to be a banner year for we, ancient coin accumulators.
All of the coins listed caught my eye, some were simply astounding.
I'm one of several new collectors of ancient coins and I'm having the time of my life, enhanced greatly by my association with this wonderful site populated by friendly, knowledgeable folks. I so appreciate the kindness that's been showered on me since I've been participating in the forums.

CA Sadly I think I've been a net seller this year so any list from me would be like a 'list of famous people who died this year'. Still, always good to clear the clutter (and double your money!) every now and then, ready for some New Year purchases

Way too many new coins this year. I thought about listing the images, but it would take up a huge amount of space. Then I thought about listing only my favorite, but I can't pick. They're all my favorites. So, in the end, I will just say 2012 was a good year for my coin collection. I enjoyed seeing everyone else's coins as well. Happy Ancient Coin Collecting New Year.
