Got a coin out of the cash drawer, and it's VERY shiny. As in if I couldn't see the cladding and a few dings on the reverse I'd think it was plated shiny. It's a bicentennial D-mint and while the side with Independence Hall looks normal, the side with Kennedy's face is so shiny that when I tried to take a picture I just got backflash--it's almost as deep a mirror as a CAM proof.

Here is the weird part: normally I'd say "oh, well, someone polished it," BUT ALL THE DETAILS ARE INTACT. Even that tiny little dimpled-in part of Kennedy's cheek and all the lines in his hair (except a couple near the part) are still there.

What gives?

Try posting a pic with the cameras flash turned off and then use a flashlight to light the coin for the pic.

Without a photo I can't say for certain, but I ran into a 1973 D that was silver plated from the looks of it. The reason I am sure it was plated is a SMALL amount of the sharpness of strike is lost on all devices equally. The edge is plated as well, though the reeding is a little blurred from the plating filling the voids more.

Of course you might have something very different, just what came to mind from a short description without photo.

Yeah, definitely need a pic or two. There are ones out there that are incredible strikes and will pull PL or DMPL ratings. You may have got lucky and come across one of those. But without a pic no way to say if it is that or plated. Use a separate light source like a flashlight as John suggested.

Okay, so, I got some pics by putting a plastic baggie over my carpet (which was once upon a time beige but time and foot traffic have a way of happening so it's a great light absorber) and shooting at an angle, but when I do, that shininess kind of disappears. You can still see it relative to the reverse of the coin, but the reverse looks downright dull in the photos, and in real life it's not.

Anybody have tips on fixing that? [:S]
